Where is the worst club in Europe?

There are seedy bars in Europe. Nightclubs with sticky floors, dodgy drinks and cheesy music are hardly a phenomenon on the outskirts of our small continent’s popular cities.

But what may surprise other nightlife enthusiasts is that the “worst nightclub in Europe” is actually in the UK.

Well, head into Durham City to Klute nightclub – which FHM once voted the second worst nightclub in Europe before the real The Worst Club ironically burned, leaving Klute to take the cake by default.

Coined with the slogans “wipe your feet on the way out” and “knee-deep in Klute” (rude), the facility has become a “rite of passage” for local university students.

If I’m honest, I couldn’t see why – until I looked at the drink prices. According to the Klute Nightclub website, which includes Purple Rain, “Sex on Beach” (clearly, “the” was way too much effort for the venue to add) and Klute Passion variations.

On ‘Quids In Every Tuesday’, which is their exclusive ‘student party’, drinks start at just £1.50 depending on the time you order, while they offer £1 shots all night.

Given that the town is known for its picturesque Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle, as well as the Russell Group University, it seems somewhat out of place to have literally the worst nightlife establishment around. But such is life.

If you’re brave enough to step up a gear, it’s worth noting that the nightclub even took the top spot for the word “Klute” on Urban Dictionary for being “the smallest, sweatiest hole you’ve ever seen.” I never had”. the displeasure of visiting”.

“Now exclusively for students,” the entry continues, “Klute’s music is still cheesy, the students are still hammered, and the walls are still dripping with sweat.” It looks promising.

And if you needed another reason to understand what makes this nightclub just then awful, Dominic Cummings, former chief adviser to Boris Johnson, is said to have been a porter in Klute in his youth.

To paint a picture of Klute’s horror, former Alabama punter Jackson stepped in after spending an evening there during his alumni years.

Jackson told LADbible: “I went to Durham University, so it’s kind of a rite of passage that you go to Klute. I went there on my first night of ‘Freshers Week’ and I Said I would never go there again, but ended up coming back several other nights when I was too drunk to realize it would be a mistake.”

Having found out it was Europe’s worst nightclub “as he was queuing to get in”, the 24-year-old thought it was a joke.

“But as soon as I walked in I realized this really was the worst nightclub in Europe – if not the worst in the world.

“He absolutely lives up to the title. It’s really disgusting… It didn’t stop me from coming back,” she admits.

Speaking of the infamous catchphrase, Jackson adds, “The ground was once so sticky that the sole of my left shoe ripped off entirely.”

But despite the “almost dungeon-like setting”, the “unbearably continuous” music and the “disgusting restrooms”, Jackson left Klute with lasting memories.

“In all honesty, I had some of the best nights of my life there. It was so bad it was good.

“If I was drunk enough, I would definitely go back. It’s fun if you’re with a group of people who have a mutual understanding that the night is going to be truly and utterly tragic.
