Pluck named to the TopDrawerSoccer team of the week

DURHAM – Senior Duke Mackenzie pluck was named to the National Team of the Week after scoring in the Blue Devils’ two wins over ranked opponents last week.

In the season opener against the Arkansas No.13 on Thursday, Aug. 19, Pluck took over in the second half, shooting two penalties in a row to give Duke back-to-back PK opportunities. After graduate student Tess Boade Converted on the first attempt, Pluck had the opportunity to extend Duke’s lead to 3-1 and did so by firing his shot in the lower right corner.

Three days later, on Sunday August 22, the North Wales, Pa. Native scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to lead Duke to a 2-1 victory over 19th Washington. First-year student Michelle cooper played a deep ball that brought Pluck just inside the 18-yard box, and after the Huskies goaltender came in to charge to stop her first attempt, Pluck blocked the rebound and calmly sent a left footed shot into the open net to lift the Blue Devils to a thrilling victory.

She also assisted on Cooper’s goal that opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, marking the sixth time in Pluck’s career that she has scored a goal and an assist in the same game. Her warm start to the season also marks the third time she has found the back of the net in consecutive games.
