#Pack9 defeats Duke in Scrimmage One, rallies for a tie in Scrimmage Two at DBAP

DURHAM, North Carolina – NC State baseball took on rival Tobacco Road Duke in a pair of seven-inning games Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, winning the opener 5-0 before rallying late to post a 3- 3 in the second game.

Twenty-five student-athletes, including 10 pitchers, made appearances between the Pack’s two seven-inning competitions.

First game | NC State 5, Duke 0

Carter Trice launched the Wolfpack offense early in the first game, throwing a solo home run to start the second inning. Trice’s solo shot carried well past the Blue Monster into left field for NC State’s first of three homers in Game 1.

NC State scored three more runs in the third frame, opening the inning with another first home run from Payton Green. LuJames Groover III then blasted the Pack’s first multi-run homer of the night to extend NC State’s lead to 4-0, driving Eli Serrano home from second base.

The Pack capped their scoring in Game 1 when Green delivered a two-out RBI single, extending their lead to 5-0.

Oregon transfer Rio Britton started on the mound for NC State, pitching two no-hitter innings for the Pack. Jacob Halford relieved Britton in the third and fourth innings, throwing two more scoreless frames past Dom Fritton and Justin Lawson completed the shutout for the Wolfpack pitching staff.

Second game | NC State 3, Duke 3
Baker Nelson started Game 2 for NC State, giving up just one run over two innings pitched. Pitching newcomers PJ Labriola, Andrew Shaffner and Everette Harris each made appearances on the mound alongside the Revenants Carson Kelly and John Miralie for the Wolfpack.

Duke struck first in the return game of the doubleheader, scoring a run in the second quarter to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 advantage. Duke added another run in the fourth inning on a passed fly ball to increase their lead to 2-0.

Josh Solomon capped the Blue Devils’ score in the sixth, hitting Duke’s only home run of the night on a solo shot.

The NC State offense opened its seventh-inning rally when newcomer Matt Heavner fired a first hit per pitch. Texas A&M transfer Kalae Harrison put the Wolfpack on the board with an RBI double, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Michael Gupton then tied on a 3-2 count, advancing 90 feet with Harrison to get both into scoring position.

With a pair of runners in scoring position, Isaiah Barkett ripped a two RBI triple to right field, emptying the bases to tie the game at 3-3. Harris then knocked out the Blue Devils in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 3-3 tie.
