No. 6 Duke beats No. 3 Penn State to open Duke Meet


DURHAM- Duke’s sixth-ranked men’s fencing team posted an undefeated performance on Saturday on the first day of the annual Duke Meet.

The Blue Devil men posted an unblemished 5-0 overall record, which was highlighted by a dominating 18-9 victory over third-ranked Penn State.

In addition to the Nittany Lions, Duke has victories over the Air Force (18-9), Boston College (19-8), Brandeis (17-10) and Johns Hopkins (22-5) in front of his home crowd at Card Gym. .

The saber and epee teams went 5-0, while the foil team posted a 4-1 record that day.

Swordsman Bowen-Wang led the whole team with 10 wins, followed closely by the juniors Finn Hoessfeld with an impressive 9-2 performance.

Terence Lee (saber), Stephen Kim (saber) and Sam Gruber (foil) all recorded eight first-year wins Ethan Nguyen (epee) posted a clear score of 7-0.

The 12th-ranked Duke women will close out the Duke Meet on Sunday starting at 8 a.m.
