Matt Barber: The Downton Abbey actor who grew up singing in Winchester Cathedral


If you recognize English actor Matt Barber, it will probably be because of his role in a popular period drama. Downton abbey.

The 38-year-old portrayed the dashing young aristocrat Atticus Aldridge on the ITV show – which is filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire – in 2014 and 2015.

Her character is married to Lady Rose Aldridge, played by Surrey-born actress Lily James.

Matt was born in London but raised in Hampshire and received classical training as a choir singer at Winchester Cathedral.

He received academic and musical scholarships at Bradfield College in Berkshire, where he served as Head Boy.

Matt then studied Classical Studies and Philosophy at Durham University, from which he graduated in 2005.

He trained as an actor at Bristol Old Vic Theater School, which he completed in 2007.

Matt, who now lives in West London with his wife Cecelia, has previously revealed he had life-saving surgery as a newborn baby at one of London’s top children’s hospitals.

“I just wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Great Ormond Street Hospital – they saved my life” he told the Mirror in 2019.
