Johnson Tabbed D1Baseball Preseason All-American

DURHAM – Right-handed junior pitcher Marcus Johnson was appointed in 2022 D1Baseball Preseason All-America Third Team, the post announced Monday.

Johnson shone out of the Blue Devils bullpen in 2021. The programs came close, he made 30 appearances, the fifth in a single season in program history, while finishing with a 3.05 ERA, five wins and seven stoppages in 56.0 innings pitched. The Fontana, Calif. native held opposing hitters to a .196 batting average, ranking fourth in the ACC. Johnson tied his teammate Luc Fox with a .305 ERA on the season, third in the ACC among pitchers who pitched an inning per game.

A second-year representative on the team’s board of directors, Johnson played a crucial role for the Blue Devils late in the season. He appeared in all four ACC Baseball Championship games and allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out seven in 6.2 tournament scoreless innings. Johnson combined with Cooper Stinson and jimmy loper to kick a shutout in the ACC title game for only the third time in tournament history.

Johnson is the second Blue Devil to earn preseason All-American honors this preseason, joining the senior outfielder RJ Schreck who was selected to the third team by college baseball. Johnson also earned second-team honors from Perfect game.

Duke opens the season Feb. 18-20 by hosting the Virginia Military Institute for a three-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
