Lohr Vineyards & Wines is proud to announce the promotion of industry veterans, Director of Winemaking Steve Peck to Vice President of Winemaking and Plant Manager Ian Herdman to Vice President of production at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. Signaling an effective streamlining that also sees current CEO Steve Lohr take on the additional role of Chairman, this new structure recognizes the accomplishments and responsibilities of key people in the family winery following the retirement of Chairman/ Chief Operating Officer Jeff Meier in December 2021. Peck and Herdman will now report to President and CEO Steve Lohr.

Named J. Lohr Red Winemaker in 2007, Steve Peck quickly drew on his passion for viticulture, his extensive knowledge of winemaking practices and his gifted palate to oversee the red wines within the famed J. Lohr Estates, J. Lohr Vineyard Series, J. Lohr Gesture, and J. Lohr Cuvée Series levels. As a young man, Peck worked alongside his uncle and became a dedicated home winemaker who learned the importance of careful attention to detail at every stage of the winemaking process, which inspired him to enroll at UC Davis. While studying fermentation science and chemical engineering, Peck enrolled in school on the Joseph Phelps Vineyards team, which supplemented his college education with a hands-on understanding of top-of-the-line winemaking methods. Napa Valley range. After graduating, Peck pursued opportunities within the biotech industry, working for Merck and Co. and Genencor International, while continuing to craft his own wines. Eager to return to a career in winemaking, he joined Five Rivers Winery as a winemaker in 2001 and was also responsible for the production of red wines for Jekel Vineyards beginning with the 2004 vintage. In this capacity, Peck worked with a wide range of vineyards in Monterey County, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara County, orchestrating the harvest for dozens of growers.
Peck, which has always been acclaimed for its red wines, was named “2016 Winemaker of the Year” by the San Luis Obispo Wine Industry and was featured in the 2017 book The winemakers of Paso Robles. In his role as Vice President, Winemaking, Peck will oversee the entire J. Lohr portfolio, which includes exclusive J. Lohr Pure Paso™ red wine and signature J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon, among other levels, and will collaborate with Winemaker , White Wine Kristen Barnhisel and Red Winemaker Brenden Wood to ensure the exceptional quality for which J. Lohr wines are known. A genuinely likeable leader with great technical acumen, Peck served as director of the Vineyard Team board of directors and vice chairman of the Paso Robles CAB Collective board of directors.
In his new role, Ian Herdman will oversee all aspects of J. Lohr’s three-county operations, including its Paso Robles and Greenfield wineries, as well as the company’s cellar, warehouse and bottling operations in San Joseph. Herdman’s promotion to Vice President, Production is the culmination of a career spanning more than 30 years on the California Central Coast, during which he established a reputation as one of the the most knowledgeable operating executives in the wine industry. Herdman, who was born in Newcastle, England, earned a degree in agricultural science from Durham University and pursued graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, before starting his career at Mirassou Winery, where he spent 12 years and obtained the position of cellar master. In 2001, Herdman joined J. Lohr, where he spent four years excelling in the role of Assistant Plant Manager before becoming Operations Manager of Tolosa Winery/Courtside Cellars in 2005. In 2017, Ian returned to J. Lohr, assuming the role of plant manager for his Greenfield and Paso Robles wineries.
Herdman is widely known for his insight, wit, and sympathetic resourcefulness and has been honored by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance with its “2020 Unsung Hero” award. In addition to overseeing J. Lohr’s operations, Herdman was recently named to the board of directors of The Vineyard Team, which is internationally recognized for its leadership in sustainable education and advocacy.
