The department and its role

The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides a number of essential services to Durham University and is responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the infrastructure and built fabric of the various campuses, including:

  • maintain and regularly review a maintenance program that takes into account the short, medium and long term needs of all university buildings and grounds;
  • the implementation of the works identified and financed within the framework of the various maintenance programs and the operation of a system to meet the daily needs, including the provision of an emergency service outside working hours;
  • provide professional technical service to the University for the design, construction and purchase of new buildings and adaptation works to existing buildings;
  • identify and record the use of space and advise on ways to increase the use of space;
  • real estate and asset management;
  • the acquisition and disposal of assets linked to the built environment;
  • the purchase and management of utilities and utilities;
  • to provide postal, delivery and security services and advice to the University; and
  • the provision of a wide range of client-oriented services, including: contract management; management of property relations and facilities; housekeeping and cleaning, business resilience, event management; reception assistance service; university retail trade; business support; health and security; and management information.

The Housekeeping and Cleaning Services Assistant will provide a range of cleaning / housekeeping services at University premises, including cleaning and maintenance of facilities, offices and common areas, used by students, university employees and business customers.

Main responsibilities

  • Perform a defined set of tasks or procedures within a team to provide responsive service to stakeholders.
  • Perhaps an indirect and / or direct service oriented towards stakeholders.
  • Follow the supervisor’s or supervisor’s instructions to identify what and how to deliver a limited set of tasks or processes.
  • As instructed, assist team members by stepping in to provide support.
  • Learn the right methods and the right tasks on the job.
  • Learn and follow the general health, safety and security procedures in the service area covered by the occupational health and safety directives.
  • Use a range of equipment, tools and resources, digital devices, software and applications as needed.
  • Communicate with line managers, supervisors, team members, other staff, students and visitors in person or using electronic tools and applications.
  • Assist team members in providing service to students, staff or frontline visitors.

Role responsibilities

  • Learn how to provide physical services to meet regulatory and statutory guidelines and protocols.
  • Keep internal and external physical environments, buildings and departments in a safe and secure operating condition.
  • Use a range of equipment, tools and resources after certification and supervision to provide services.
  • Assist team members in ensuring the safety, security, maintenance and servicing of systems, buildings, equipment and facilities.
  • Ensures own work is performed in accordance with task and environment specific risk assessments.
  • Where indicated, wear and use protective equipment and clothing to perform tasks.
  • All other reasonable tasks.

Specific role requirements

  • Adopt and promote a flexible approach to work and be prepared to cover absences, with reasonable notice.
  • Competent working under minimal direct supervision with designated local duties and liaising, if necessary, with appropriate members of staff.
  • The role will require an element of physical manual handling, which may include lifting and transporting equipment and deliveries.
  • Work evenings and weekends, depending on the needs of the business.
  • Attend all training and upgrading as needed.
