Gabby Logan has revealed that Sir Bobby Robson made a group of sexist Manchester United fans look “like idiots” after the Newcastle United legend “started to shake his chest”.

Logan was covering the Red Devils’ Champions League group stage game against Sparta Prague for ITV with Sir Bobby and his colleague Ally McCoist in 2004.

The broadcaster was quickly spotted by a small contingent of traveling supporters in the Letna Stadium studio, and they began to sing a sexist song.

Logan, a proud Newcastle fan, has now spoken about this experience and Sir Bobby’s brilliant response in a new book, Football, She Wrote: Anthology of Women’s Writing on the Game .

“I didn’t know where to look, I felt embarrassed that everything was going in front of Sir Bobby,” wrote the Durham University graduate.

“And then he just opened his jacket like he was pulling out his t — and started shaking his chest.

“It was so funny and unexpected. He completely defused the situation and made them look like idiots. After that, he turned around and winked at me.

“The next day, while I was at the airport, a man Utd fan who was having a hangover came up to me and said, ‘Uh, I was one of the guys singing get outta shout. I’m so sorry. ‘

“I said, ‘You wouldn’t sing that if your wife or sister was sitting next to you, would you?’

“And he said ‘No’. So I said, ‘Okay, well, don’t sing it anymore.’

“I felt powerful enough to scold him. But I don’t think I would have done this without Sir Bobby’s support the night before.”
