Fila and NBA legend Grant Hill unveil renovated basketball courts in Detroit

A pair of basketball courts in Detroit have had a makeover, thanks to Fila and NBA legend Grant Hill.

The brand and baller launched a court renovation program in 2019, with the goal of supporting local youth, starting with Hillside Park in Durham, North Carolina. For the second location, they looked to Chandler Park in Detroit.

To bring this effort to life, Fila and the Tamia & Grant Hill Foundation has partnered with the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Division and the non-profit Chandler Park Conservancy.

Fila said the courts had been completely rebuilt, which involved giving them new surfaces, hoops and back panels. Plus, the courts were painted red, yellow, teal, and black, reminiscent of the uniforms Hill made his debut in 1996 while playing for the Detroit Pistons. Additionally, the courts feature the Fila and Grant Hill logos, as well as Hill’s jersey number 33.

“After the record of the past year and a half, it is a welcome respite to offer some positivity and levity to the community of Chandler Park,” Hill said in a statement. “At a time when staying physically active is particularly important, we wanted to create a safe and enjoyable space, just in time for the start of the school year.

He continued, “I have spent much of my professional career in Detroit and I am very proud of this city, with lasting memories of my playing days here and the welcome I have received since. I am delighted to show my appreciation to the community, while giving these children the opportunity to get outside and help them prepare for a bright future. “

Hill, who wore Fila for much of his NBA career, signed a lifetime contract with the brand in October 2018.

“Fila was here for my first professional steps in the field,” Hill said at the time in a statement. “We have now come full circle and I am delighted to be part of the family again. I am grateful for the brand’s continued loyalty and support as we begin this new chapter together.
