Duke Football Parking and Traffic Alert – Saturday, October 1


DURHAM, North Carolina – If you are traveling to Duke’s West Campus on Saturday, October 1, please be aware of the following parking and traffic alerts for the Duke vs. Virginia football game at 7:30 p.m. on Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. Review the information below and allow extra time in your travels to avoid delays.

To allow weather conditions to improve after Tropical Storm Ian passed through North Carolina on Friday and early Saturday morning, Iron Duke, the first general public parking lots (jogging track, chemistry courts, small circuit) and parking lot RV/OV will open at 1:30 PM on Saturday October 1st. There will be NO access to RV/OV parking on Friday September 30th. For more specific information on these lots, please see the Duke Football parking information below.

Guests are strongly encouraged to wait until 1:30 p.m. to arrive on campus to allow facilities staff to clear parking lots of debris, address standing water areas as much as possible, and prepare grounds for match day use.

Some bundles may experience reduced capacity due to the effects of storms. Please follow the directions of parking staff when directing customers to available parking in a lot or to the next available parking spot.

Traffic checkpoints

For all Duke Football home games, checkpoints are set up on roads surrounding campus to keep only necessary traffic on roads inside campus. Checkpoints will become active at 4:30 p.m. All Iron Duke Football parking permit holders must have their permit hanging from their rearview mirror when approaching to access these checkpoints and their designated lots.

Control points are located at the following intersections:

  • NC 751/Cameron Blvd. and Science Drive
  • NC 751/Cameron Blvd. and Duke University Road
  • Duke University Road and Chapel Drive
  • Duke University Road and Towerview Road
  • Circuit Drive and Towerview Road

NC 751/Cameron Blvd. Traffic patterns

To help reduce congestion and delays on NC 751/Cameron Blvd. upon arrival on campus, please review the following routes and lane assignments:

  • Heading south on NC 751 (approaching campus from US-15/501, exit 107):
    • General public car park – Turn left onto Erwin Road
    • Iron Duke Parking Permit – Use the left lane after the Erwin Rd intersection
    • Parking accessible to the general public – Use the left lane after the intersection of Erwin Road
    • Thru Traffic – Use Right Lane

  • Heading North on NC 751 (approaching campus from Academy Road):
    • Iron Duke Parking Permit – Use Right Lane
    • Parking lot accessible to the general public – Turn right on Duke University Road
    • Thru Traffic – Use left lane
    • General Public Parking – Use the left lane until you pass the Science Drive garage; Turn right onto Erwin Road

Duke University Traffic Restrictions

For all Duke home football games, traffic on Duke University Road between Anderson Street and NC 751/Cameron Blvd. is reserved for Iron Duke Football parking permit holders and guests requiring accessible parking only. Iron Duke Football parking permit holders must have their permit hanging from their rear view mirror to access it. Guests requiring accessible parking should have their state issued plate or license plate clearly visible and speak to traffic control officers for assistance. Restrictions will begin at 4:30 p.m. and reopen to all traffic at 8:00 p.m. Duke University Road will be restricted again from approximately 10 p.m. to midnight.

Closure of Towerview Road between Union Drive and Towerview Roundabout

Due to heavy foot traffic, Towerview Road will be closed between Union Drive and the Wannamaker Drive roundabout. The closing will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. Towerview Road will close again from approximately 10 p.m. to midnight.

One-way traffic from Frank Bassett Drive to the Grounds Lot

Due to carpool operations, Frank Bassett Drive will be one-way from the Science Drive entrance to the Grounds Lot exit beginning at 4:30 p.m. All Iron Duke football parking permit holders for the field are encouraged to enter and exit the field from NC 751/Cameron Blvd. to avoid carpool traffic.

Iron Duke Parking at Science Drive Garage Entrance/Exit of NC 751/Cameron Blvd.

All Iron Duke Football parking permit holders for Science Drive Garage (SDG and STAFF) must enter and exit the garage via NC 751/Cameron Blvd. (GPS address: 3100 Cameron Boulevard).

Duke of Iron car park

All Iron Duke football parking lots will open at 1:30 p.m. Iron Duke Football parking permits must be scanned and displayed to access the designated field.

FREE public parking

All normal sized vehicles park FREE in our general public car parks on football match days. Each lot has been assigned a color-coded area to help customers identify their parking location on game day.

The first public parks and promenades open in 1:30 p.m. – the Lot Jogging Trail on NC 751/Cameron Blvd. (pink area) and the chemistry lot (purple area) and the small circuit lot on Circuit Drive (purple area). PARKING IS FREE.

The remaining general public parks and walks open at 4:30 p.m.

Circuit lots on Circuit Drive (purple area) with spillover to Research Drive Garage (RDG) on Research Drive. PARKING IS FREE.

Park and rides (yellow zone) in lots GC and H on Yearby Avenue open at 4:30 p.m. PARKING IS FREE. Courtesy shuttles run every 15-20 minutes from these grounds to the Duke’s Chapel. All courtesy shuttles are equipped with a lift to assist people with disabilities. Per Duke University policy, masks/face coverings are required for game day guests using courtesy shuttles.

Parking accessible to the general public

PLATE OR STATE ISSUED LICENSE PLATE REQUIREDAccessible parking is located in Blue Zone lots B-7 and B-4 on Wannamaker Drive, off Duke University Road. Blue Zone Lot B-7 will open at 1:30 p.m. and B-4 Lot will open at 4:30 p.m. Van service with a lift will begin at 4:30 p.m. PARKING IS FREE. An accessible drop-off/pick-up point is available outside the Wilson Gate of Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium in Blue Zone Lot B-5 off Wannamaker Drive. After dropping off guests, vehicles should proceed to lot B-7 or B-4 for game day parking.

In the designated public accessible car parks in the blue zone and outside the stadium gates, designated pick-up points for accessible vans are available. Look for information boards and seats indicating each pick-up point in the Blue Zone (lots B-7, B-4) and outside the Wilson Gate (East Lobby), at the Whitford Drive Circle ( Bostock Gate, Tribull Plaza and North Concourse) and Grounds Lot Bus Stop (Powers Gate, Blue Devil Tower, West Concourse). Informative signage will indicate the location of DUACCESS SMS requests. To request an accessible van at a designated pickup point or for assistance from an alternate parking lot on game day, text “DUACCESS” to 919-808-5576 with request, location and number of guests. (Example: “Van DUACCESS, Lot B-4, 4 Guests”). Customers can also speak to the parking attendant for assistance. Please note that vans run on call and may take 15 minutes or more to arrive depending on game day traffic. Per Duke University policy, masks/face coverings are required for customers using accessible vans.

RV/PV parking

The RV/OV parking lot is located in the GC lot on Yearby Avenue. Due to Tropical Storm Ian, there will be no access to the RV/OV field on Friday, September 30e. The RV/OV field will be open on Saturday October 1stst at 1:30 p.m.. There is a $50 fee for parking – ONLINE SALE ONLY (including on the field on game day). RV/OV permits can also be purchased at parking.duke.edu/visitor/athletic/football/rv-parking-permits. All vehicles must be removed by Sunday, October 2n/a at noon (12:00 p.m.).

Bus parking

Buses that drop off/pick up guests and park for the game (i.e. no tailgating, etc.) will park for free at the Duke University Road 2 field. Buses that host group tailgates, etc. will be considered Recreational/Oversize Vehicles (RV/OV) and will need to purchase an RV/OV permit for the GC lot (see information above). Rideshare/taxi information

Use carpooling and get dropped off right in front of the powers’ door! Frank Bassett Drive has been designated as a drop-off/pick-up location for rideshare services with visible logos. Frank Bassett Drive can be accessed from NC 751/Cameron Blvd. at Science Drive – there is no access from the lot. Services attempting to drop off/pick up at other locations near the stadium will be denied access and will be directed to that location. There is no match day parking at this location – 20 minute drop off/pick up area only.
