Duke Blanks Virginia Tech in Straight Sets


DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team won a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) against Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 15-10 (6-8 ACC) while the Hokies drop to 10-16 (1-13 ACC).

“It was a good weekend for us to win on Friday and today”, head coach Jolene nagel noted. “Now we’re on the road and we have some tough games ahead, but it’s great for the team.”

The Blue Devils were once again led by the seniors Ade Owokoniran with 13 kills and a single error to reach 0.50% in the second year Georgia Stavrinides added 10. Junior Lizzie fleming Also counted seven and no errors to hit 0.700 percent as the Blue Devils hit 0.299 for the game.

Setter Camille Nazor 35 assists in libero Mackenzie cole picked up 18 digs to pace Duke’s regular defense. At net, Fleming recorded three blocks while Nazor scored two aces for the service corps.

Duke took an early 1-0 lead after the first set and didn’t give up the lead once as Stavrinides scored eight kills early in the game.

The Blue Devils struggled to find their rhythm in the second with seven changes of lead and 11 draws. A huge block from Fleming and Nazor tied the game at 18 and put the momentum back on Duke’s side. The Hokies returned to tie him up at 22, but Moorea wood came off the bench and provided a big spark late in the second to help Duke take the 2-0 advantage. Graduate student Payton Schwantz also stepped into the action, recording four kills in six attempts with his first first-place move in 14 games.

Duke took charge of the game in the third set with a 15-5 run as Duke hit an impressive 0.519 percent with 15 kills and just one error.

The Hokies were led by Griere Hughes with 10 assists while passer Brie Postema distributed 27 assists.

Duke travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass., To face Boston College on Saturday, November 13.
