Duke begins fall team practice

DURHAM – The Duke baseball team opened full team fall practice Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.

The Head Coach Chris Pollard is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Duke program. Pollard led the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances for the first time in program history. In 2021, Duke won the ACC Tournament Championship, his first conference title since 1961.

“It’s one of my favorite times of the year,” Pollard said of fall training. “It’s a chance for all of us to be on the pitch together. It’s a period of growth for our program. I love the development that is happening in the fall. There is a lot of excitement with this. group.

“We’ve had six very productive weeks of individual training, working in small groups. I think our guys are ready to train as a full team and play the game they’re meant to be.”

The Blue Devils begin the fall ball team game in preparation for their fall scrimmages against Davidson (Oct. 16 in Kannapolis, NC) and NC State (Oct. 22 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park).

Many veterans have returned for the Blue Devils, such as the first-year All-American left-hander Luc Renard, All-ACC outfielder RJ Schreck, right handed pitcher Marcus johnson, first baseman Chris Crabtree and right handed pitcher Henri williams.

Duke also added the nation’s first freshman by Perfect game in shortstop Alex mooney to highlight the country’s ninth class.

“It looks a lot more normal so far this fall,” Pollard commented compared to last season. “You compare where we are this year to where we were last year, it’s a very different feeling. You will hear that from our players. The ability to be around each other in the locker room and to interact with each other away from the pitch, it felt a lot more normal, thank goodness. “

The Blue Devils open the 2022 season by hosting VMI for a three-game series February 18-20 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
