ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – Joe Manhertz, assistant director of athletics at Duke University, has been named the new director of athletics at St. Bonaventure University, interim president Dr. Joseph Zimmer announced Thursday.

“We are all very happy that Joe Manhertz is joining our management team as Director of Athletics,” Zimmer said. “His vast experience in some of the nation’s premier programs positions him well to lead the St. Bonaventure Track and Field Department to even greater glory in the years to come.”

Manhertz was selected following a process led by a research committee made up of members of the Saint-Bonaventure athletics department and university staff and assisted by CarrSports Consulting. Barb Questa, Acting Athletic Director, and Dick Penna, 1968, University Administrator, co-chaired the committee.

Head of the major gifts development arm of Duke Athletics, Manhertz brings an elite resume to western New York State, including 20 years of working for universities in Power Five conferences while gaining experience in some of the country’s sporting powers.

He has spent the last decade in Durham, providing primary funding for Duke’s building initiatives, major upgrades and long-term endowments. During this time, he led the creation and direction of the Duke Athletic Major Gift office while also being a member of the Blue Devils leadership team responsible for executing the department’s strategic plan.

Manhertz was responsible for planning and leading the comprehensive campaign that led to the modernization of the Cameron Indoor Stadium, as well as the Duke football stadium, and football / lacrosse and track facilities while also creating scholarships and endowments. Along with his fundraising efforts, he also held an administrative position, helping to oversee Duke’s baseball, men’s and women’s track and field and fencing programs.

“I am a passionate person and St. Bonaventure represented the passion, what people feel about this place, the deep connection that anyone associated with Bona has with the university,” said Manhertz. “To be a part of this is special. I am honored to be a Bonnie and to help our student-athletes succeed in track and field and in life.

“I would like to thank Dr Zimmer and the research committee for this incredible opportunity, as well as my wife and children for their support and the confidence they have in me,” said Manhertz. “I also thank my staff here at Duke who have supported me so much: Dr Kevin White (former vice president and director of athletics), as well as Dr Vincent Price (university president), Nina King (vice-president). President and Director of Athletics) and Tom Coffman (Assistant Director of Athletics) I also want to thank Stan Wilcox (Executive Vice President of NCAA Regulatory Affairs), Mark Murphy (former Director of Athletics at Colgate and Green Bay Packers current president and CEO), Gene Smith (director of athletics at Ohio State) and Jake Crouthamel (former director of athletics at Syracuse). I learned so much from them . “

Prior to joining Duke, Manhertz previously served as Director of Athletics Development at Ohio State University for three years, leading major giving activities for the Buckeyes Athletics program. He also spent seven years at Syracuse University in a development role, dramatically increasing gift giving to Orange’s basketball and football programs. His career path also took him to Hamilton College as Associate Director of Leadership Giving.

“Being on the Saint-Bonaventure campus sealed the deal,” Manhertz said. “The people of Bonaventure are hungry to take the plunge. Hearing the passion of the students, coaches and staff, what Bona means to them and what they think it can be is a perfect match for what I think it can. I can’t wait to get down to work to take Bonaventure Athletics to the next level.

He also worked as an assistant professor of sports marketing for the SUNY Cortland Sport Management program (2001-07) and was the inaugural class representative of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Minority Males. Prior to his professional career, he interned with the National Football League Players Association.

Manhertz also brings regional connections to Saint-Bonaventure. A graduate of Colgate University in 1996, Manhertz played both basketball and football for the Raiders and went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management in 1998 from Ohio State University. He has deep ties to the region, having grown up in Fairport, outside Rochester, where his mother still resides.

“Growing up in the Rochester area, I understand the love that people in the community have for Bonaventure and for western New York and seeing it firsthand underscored it. The connection is really special,” he said. Manhertz said, adding: “I am also delighted to be back with the Bills Mafia.”

He is married to Pamela Koehler, a practicing Indiana lawyer who is also from Fairport. The couple have a blended family with four children: Benton, Mallory, Joseph III (Trey) and Trevor.

Manhertz will take charge of the 19 Division I athletics programs at Saint-Bonaventure and will oversee the University’s nearly 380 student-athletes.

An introductory press conference will take place in the coming days.
