Blue Devils ready to host Duke Invitational

DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team are set to open their first of two home tournaments this weekend, starting with the Duke Invitational. The Blue Devils will host College of Charleston, Howard and Miami (OH) for six games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke will face Howard on Friday, September 3 at 10 am, before a 7 pm game against Miami (OH) and close the tournament on Saturday against College of Charleston at 2:30 pm All six games will be broadcast on ACCNX.

LAST TIME
Duke continued his undefeated start to the 2021 season on Tuesday by beating Elon 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16) to open the slate at home. Duke was run by juniors Lizzie fleming and Gracie johnson with eight eliminations each and just three mistakes combined to help the Blue Devils reach a .275 hit percentage. Junior Moorea wood also added six, while the first year Rylie kadel added five and only one error to reach 0.500 in his Cameron Indoor Stadium debut.

Setter Alex springate Record 33 assists as she found nine Blue Devils while Duke’s defense was fairly evenly distributed. Libero Mackenzie cole led the team with 14 digs, followed by Springate (9) and Johnson (8). Fleming did it again at net with four blocks as Georgia Stavrinides and Lily cooper each added three to help limit the Phoenix to just a .096 game-winning percentage.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
colonel of Charleston: Duke holds a 5-2 lead over College of Charleston, but the two teams haven’t met since 2013. Head Coach Jolene nagel is 4-0 with a five-game winning streak, but the Cougars have forced four sets in their last two previous meetings.

Howard: This weekend marks just the second time in program history Duke will play Howard. In their only meeting in 1978, Duke claimed victory.

Miami (Ohio): Duke and Miami (OH) will meet for the fourth time in school history this weekend as the Redhawks hold a 2-1 advantage in the series. The two haven’t met since 1990 when Miami (OH) won a 3-1 victory at Durham.

SEARCH FOR OPPONENTS
colonel of Charleston: The Cougars are 3-1 at the start of the 2021 season after hosting a tournament this weekend. Sophomore Sammy Campion was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week following her performance over the weekend. As a team, the Cougars reach 0.225% and are led by Gabi Bailey with 44 kills.

Howard: The Bison are 2-1 going into the weekend after scoring victories over George Washington (3-0) and Georgetown (3-1) and are led by three with more than 20 kills (Bria Woodard, Jennifer Bolden and Kendall Smith).

Miami (Ohio): The Redhawks have had a tough start to the season after setbacks to Austin Peay,
Alabama and Marshall. Passer Gracie Norris has 65 assists under her belt while Miami (OH) is just 0.140.

BACK TO ACTION
Nagel has returned almost his entire offense of the 2020-21 season and is currently led offensively by Lizzie fleming (34 killed), Gracie johnson (32) and Ade Owokoniran (30). Defensively, libero Mackenzie cole has 57 smuggler excavations Alex springate has collected 113 assists so far in three games. Fleming also leads the team in blocks with 10 (2 solo, 8 assisted).

MILESTONES TO MONITOR
Several Blue Devils are approaching important milestones in their careers: Ade Owokoniran, Payton Schwantz and Alex springate. Owokoniran has 828 wins to date while Schwantz has 820 career digs. Springate has 844 assists as the three look to reach their respective 1,000 career marks.
